Knowledge Equity and Dutch Open Science: A Pulse Check

The central aim of the session will be to conduct a pulse check on the Dutch OS communities’ progress on various elements of knowledge equity. Participants will leave the session not only with a deeper understanding of knowledge equity but also with practice-based ideas on knowledge equity actions they can implement in their own context.

Not all ways of doing (Open) Science lead to equitable outcomes. This session deals with the oft-ignored question of whether all researchers and all research results and insights have a fair chance of participating and being funded, seen, collaborated with, published, indexed, included, rewarded and reused.

This session will build on and refine the goals of the ‘Knowledge Equity’ workshop we delivered at NOSF 2024 in Maastricht, where the participants mapped over 60 issues and barriers relating to knowledge equity in the Dutch academic context and globally. This active, hands-on session will focus on existing ‘solutions’ and initiatives.

As introduction, we look at some of the overall values detailed in statements from UNESCO and others. Various dimensions of inequity (e.g. gender, geography, language) that were noted during NOSF 2024 will be displayed on the walls. We will welcome participants to reflect on how they perceive change or progress in these themes, in an open discussion. We will dive deeper into a few of the more promising activities and assess their potential to scale or be adapted in other contexts.
