Project Hippocampus: Building an Open AI Ecosystem for Research

Participants will leave with a clear understanding of Project Hippocampus, the role of OpenML within the Dutch open AI landscape, and how existing Open Science infrastructures are being connected to support more open and collaborative AI research. We hope the session will inspire participants to see how their own expertise and role can contribute to a more open and collaborative AI research landscape, regardless of their technical background.

AI research is moving fast, but the infrastructure supporting open and reproducible AI often isn't. What if datasets, models, computing resources and research communities could work together more seamlessly? In this lightning talk, discover how Project Hippocampus is helping build a national ecosystem for open AI research in the Netherlands. By connecting existing infrastructures such as OpenML, SURF, DANS and Hugging Face, the project aims to make it easier for researchers to discover resources, reproduce experiments and contribute to a growing network for open AI. We'll share why building open AI is about more than technology alone. It also means bringing together communities, expertise and Open Science practices that make research more transparent, reusable and collaborative. Whether you're a data steward, research software engineer, community manager, researcher or policymaker, discover how you can contribute to the next chapter of open AI research in the Netherlands.
